Here we go... primal

I had dinner with my friend, Debi, on Friday night after work. I had not seen her for a few months, and she looks fantastic!! She and her husband are pretty darn good in my opinion about eating organic, eating well and exercising. I very much admire them. She informed me that they had started a new diet, the Primal Diet, about two months ago. Two months! I still can't get over how great she looks.

Shortly after the new year, my husband and I decided that we needed to start eating better and taking care of ourselves, and we did great... for a few weeks. Man, once you cheat a couple times, it is so hard to get back on track.

I have spent the weekend researching going primal, and I am taking the plunge! The main concept is that you cut out grains altogether, and even cut way back (or out) on dairy. Agriculture did not exist in the time of our primal ancestors, and so the belief is that our genes are not any different now than they were then, so we are not designed to digest grains or dairy.

I love me some bread and pasta. I am worried about how much I will crave not having a sandwich with bread, or ravioli or a cookie or a cracker even. Not that I will never have a cookie again, but I really want to be committed to changing the way I eat. I have already had the notion for quite some time that my body does not metabolize grain carbohydrates well anyway, I have just never had the intention of giving them up.

So, after having read a ton of articles and information on Mark's Daily Apple, I feel confident that there is plenty to eat while cutting out grains. Lots, and I mean lots, of veggies, meat, eggs, good fats... nuts, seeds, etc. and fruit (berries). It really makes a lot of sense to me, so I am excited to see what happens.

I am the heaviest right now that I have ever been, except that I have lost about five pounds so far already before the Primal Diet that I will start tomorrow. The picture isn't a great one of me, because obviously I avoid pictures at all costs. But it is at Thanksgiving. Just a frame of reference because hopefully in a few months I will have a much better one to post!! :)
